What is “LVDT”?Linear Variable Differential Transformer used for measuring linear displacement

Do you know about a sensor called LVDT which is installed in almost all the Commercial and Military aircrafts for flight control?
LVDT works for measuring the mechanical displacement of the movable devices which moves linearly like Actuator.

01.How to use LVDT?

LVDT is a sensor that detects mechanical linear motion (displacement) by converting into an electrical signal. This non-contact, absolute position sensor is widely used for Aircraft Applications.

LVDT for Aircraft Applications

LVDT is widely used in not only Commercial Aircraft but also Business Jet in various kinds of places.
Mainly used for Flight Control System - Actuators for Aileron, Elevator, Rudder and Spoiler.
And also, short stroke LVDT is used for Actuator for EHSV.

02.Characteristics

  • Absolute measurement
  • Simple Structure & Brushless structure enables High vibration resistance
  • High Performance, High Repeatability & High Reliability
  • Single & Multi channel designs
  • Short stroke LVDT & Long stroke LVDT available
  • Ratio metric output signal available
  • Operating under hydraulic pressure environment
  • Environmental resistance (RTCA-DO160/MIL-STD-810)
  • High EMC resistance
  • Space Saving

03.Working Principle

The shape of LVDT is a cylinder hollow, and consists of a Coil Assembly and a Core.
The Coil Assembly is composed of one Primary Coil (P) and two Secondary Coils (S1 & S2).
The core is the moving part and the amount of displacement of its’ linear motion can be detected as a change in output voltage.
